Installing the SNMPD MD-RAID connector

Prerequisites

The snmp-agents/snmpd-mdraid-connector package has two prerequisites which must be fulfilled before we can begin the installation process. Although they will be automatically installed as dependencies if they are not already available additional configuration will obviously be required.

  1. The net-analyzer/net-snmp daemon.

If you require more information on configuring, securing or using the SNMP daemon and utilities provided in the net-analyzer/net-snmp package the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) guide may be of interest.

  2. The sys-fs/mdadm utilities.

The analyzer/snmpd-mdraid-connector obtains the MD-RAID state data using the mdadm utility provided in the sys-fs/mdadm package.

Installing the overlay

The snmp-agents/snmpd-mdraid-connector package is not currently available as part of the official Gentoo Linux distribution but is distributed using an overlay maintained and supported by us at Hacking Networked Solutions. Before the snmp-agents/snmpd-mdraid-connector package can be installed therefore the overlay must first be installed by following the instructions in the Installing the Hacking Networked Solutions overlay for Gentoo Linux section of the Hacking Networked Solutions overlay for Gentoo Linux documentation.

Installing the package

Once the required overlay has been installed the installation of the snmp-agents/snmpd-mdraid-connector package is as easy as any other on Gentoo Linux and is performed using the emerge application as usual as shown below.

lisa emerge -pv snmpd-mdraid-connector
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild      ] dev-libs/snmpd-connector-lib-0.2
[ebuild      ] snmp-mibs/hacking-snmp-mib-0.1
[ebuild      ] snmp-mibs/smartctl-snmp-mib-0.2
[ebuild      ] snmp-agents/snmpd-mdraid-connector-0.5

Once you are happy that the snmp-agents/snmpd-mdraid-connector package will not install any dependencies you do not require, and that any dependencies which will be installed have the correct use-flags set, you can install the package as shown below.
