What is a MIB file?

As the raison d'être of MIB files is to allow for SNMP implementations to be extended it is obviously impractical for the net-analyzer/net-snmp package to include all extant MIB files. Instead the net-analyzer/net-snmp package includes all the standard MIB files specified by the SNMP protocol in RFC-1157◳ as well as some additional MIB files which describe standard hardware and software. By default the net-analyzer/net-snmp package, and any other package which wishes to distribute MIB files, installs the MIB files in /usr/share/snmp/mibs/ so that any application which wishes to reference them may do so.
